Colombia leads the 2019 Global Financial Inclusion Microscope for the 2nd consecutive year

Dominican Republic – Colombia, Peru, Uruguay and Mexico lead the ranking of the Global Microscope on the environment for financial inclusion, an index that focuses on regulation, political strategies, and infrastructure to address this issue. In these four countries, financial inclusion is a priority and incorporates digital approaches. While Colombia and Mexico lead public policy and consumer protection categories, Uruguay and Peru stand out in stability and financial integrity.

IDB Group launches Open Innovation Challenge to reduce plastic use

Washington, D.C. — The Inter-American Development Bank Group together with MIT Solve launch an Open Innovation Challenge that seeks to find the most innovative solutions that substantially reduce or eliminate single-use plastic and plastic waste in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Rethink Plastics Challenge offers the selected solutions prizes totaling 60,000 USD.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Providing safe sanitation for all in Latin America requires not only significant investments, but a change of paradigm to be able to do more with less resources. Right now, only 22% to the population of Latin America and the Caribbean have access to those services.

Program to eliminate malaria in Mesoamerica identifies 183 active outbreaks

The Regional Initiative to Eliminate Malaria has presented today its first results to the heads of state and government of the region. The goal is for Central America countries, the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Mexico to be declared free of Malaria by 2022. The Regional Initiative to Eliminate Malaria (IREM in Spanish) presented today to the heads of state and government of Mesoamerica the first results of the joint efforts being waged since early 2019 to eliminate malaria from these countries by 2022.

IDB-FEMSA Award to innovation on water & sanitation opens call for 2019

The IDB-FEMSA Awards to innovation on water and sanitation are reaching their tenth anniversary in 2019 and will be celebrating the occasion with a special edition that calls on those who have innovative solutions to compete for a special prize.   First, second, and third place winners of the IDB-FEMSA Awards will receive $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 in cash, respectively. This year will also feature a special category called “All stars,” where prior editions finalists will compete for a one-time cash prize of $15,000.

IDB and GCF partnership set to implement projects in Argentina and Paraguay

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) received the first tranche of the financial contribution from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) this week. The funds will be used to start implementation of the projects “Promoting risk mitigation instruments and finance for renewable energy and energy efficiency investments” in Argentina and “Promoting Private Sector Investments in Energy Efficiency in the Industrial Sector” in Paraguay.

IDB launches Superheroes of Development contest to recognize executing agencies

In its second edition, the call for proposals will be open from March 4th to May 17th, 2019. The Superheroes of Development Award will recognize executing agencies of IDB-financed projects that have successfully addressed challenges during its implementation. The contest will identify eight finalists from across Latin America and the Caribbean who will travel to IDB’s Headquarters in Washington, D.C. to present their solutions.
