The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a $175 million loan to widen approximately 35 kilometers of the El Rancho–Teculután section of northern Highway CA-9 in Guatemala. The program is a strategic and crucial step towards expanding the country’s main route for exports, a process already in progress. The engineering works will benefit the approximately 25,281 people who travel this section of the highway daily and will give better road access to 442,375 people in the departments of El Progreso and Zacapa.

(Updated to add the starting date) Ilan Goldfajn was elected president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) today during a Special Meeting of the Bank’s Board of Governors. The meeting was held at IDB Headquarters in Washington, D.C., with delegations attending virtually and in person. Nominated by Brazil, Goldfajn will take office for a five-year term on December 19, 2022.

With a $4 million grant, the IDB will contribute with actions that focus on areas with the highest risk of transmission, which are home to nearly 5 million people across 149 municipalities in Guatemala. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a $4 million grant to help Guatemala eliminate malaria by 2025 and sustainably prevent its reintroduction. The funding is from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Working through its Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Agriculture, Israel is contributing a $3 million grant to help create the new Innovation for Climate-Smart Agribusinesses initiative managed by IDB Invest and IDB Lab.
