IDB will exhibit “Gems” from its Art Collection for the First Time

The exhibition “The Vault: Treasures from the IDB Art Collection” will be open to the public from October 21 to 24 at the Long View Gallery in Washington DC

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will display a selection of the finest works in its art collection outside of its offices for the first time. The exhibition, "The Vault: Treasures from the IDB Art Collection," will be open from October 21 to 24 at the Long View Gallery, one of Washington, D.C.’s largest contemporary art galleries.

The IDB started its art collection three decades ago and has since continued to acquire artwork by aspiring and creative artists who reflect the diversity of the bank's member countries. The pieces embody the different facets of the bank’s work such as reducing poverty and inequality, contributing to sustainable growth in the region, and addressing climate change.

"This exhibition’s goal is to share with the Washington DC community, and beyond, our most precious treasures and values, exposing Latin America and the Caribbean culture beyond our premises. It is part of a broader policy of the IDB to serve as a bridge between LAC and the world, carving out the region's role and future on the global stage. Culture is the soul of the region. And these art pieces reflect the spirit of a region. They have a unique power to simultaneously reach emotions and stir consciences. It is a democratic platform offering space for marginalized voices and inspiring fair and productive societies. We hope everybody will enjoy the visual richness of Latin America and the Caribbean," President Goldfajn said.

The exhibition will feature 60 pieces by artists including women, girls, indigenous people, and Afro descendants from various countries across the Americas and the Caribbean.

One of them is Olga de Amaral, a Colombian textile and visual artist known for her large-scale abstract fiber creations. Her work was recently showcased in the “Woven Histories” exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Another is Margarita Azurdia, a feminist Guatemalan sculptor, painter, and performance artist widely recognized in international biennials and competitions. The exhibition will also showcase pieces by young artists such as Kika Carvalho. Carvalho is a prominent visual artist from Brazil nominated in 2021 for the prestigious PIPA Award. Ad Minoliti (Argentina) and Giana De Dier (Panama), who is currently representing her country at the Venice Biennial, will also be part of the exhibit.

This exhibition was curated by Julieta Maroni, Curator of the IDB Art Collection.
