Ayer se celebró en Colombia el Día de la Excelencia Educativa o “Día E”. Durante todo el día, las instituciones educativas públicas y privadas conocieron y discutieron los resultados del “Índice Sintético de Calidad Educativa”, una medición integral del desempeño de cada escuela oficial y privada producido por el Ministerio de Educación Nacional (MEN) y el Instituto Colombiano para la Evaluación de la Educación (ICFES).

Good news for Peru! Today, students in second grade are learning more than their peers from eight years ago. This is indicated by the results of the Census of  Evaluation of Students, which measures student learning in reading and math. The news is positive in several aspects but, of course, there are still challenges ahead.

"To read is to travel in time." This is one of the phrases that Yohanna, fourth grade teacher in the Dominican Republic, constantly repeats to her students. She knows that motivating them is key to improve their reading and writing skills. As a result, she implemented a class project called "The Traveler's Book", in which children borrow reading materials to take home. And what about math? She teaches them by playing and smiling, while she tells us: "With love, teaching is better."

Tests, tests and more tests.  And still, in many countries all around the world, students do not seem to be making the progress that is desired despite of all of the efforts.  All of these tests try to measure learning outcomes in key subjects such as language, mathematics and science but little attention is paid to the development of character, mindset and other non-technical skills that are key to success, not only in the school setting but later on in life.Indeed, Nobel Laureate James Heckman, as well as many others, would argue that
