Algunos países de Latinoamérica han estado implementando la creación de nuevas áreas protegidas como una estrategia para salvaguardar los ecosistemas y su biodiversidad. Costa Rica y Panamá, por ejemplo, tienen más del 30% de su territorio bajo la administración de los Sistemas Nacionales de Áreas Protegidas, lo cual demuestra, al menos en papel, la importancia que tiene la biodiversidad para las estrategias de desarrollo nacionales.
