En el mundo de la inmediatez, de la rutina, les invito a tomar unos minutos para reflexionar en los impactos del cambio climático y cómo nos afectan a diario. Desde severas olas de calor en verano, a extensas sequías que afectan las cosechas de los agricultores o las lluvias extremas que hacen destrozos en la infraestructura. En América Latina y el Caribe, lo vivimos casi a diario. Sin embargo, la región es consciente de los desafíos que plantea el cambio climático y se prepara para combatir.

La energía limpia, la reducción de emisiones, los empleos verdes, la adaptación y la resiliencia pueden ser oportunidades de crecimiento sostenible en países en desarrollo y emergentes, en los que el cambio climático resulta una amenaza para el desarrollo económico sostenible. Para generar estas oportunidades y mitigar los riesgos climáticos, los responsables de la toma de decisiones deben integrar sus planes de cambio climático con las agendas nacionales de desarrollo en Contribuciones Determinadas a Nivel Nacional (NDC por sus siglas en inglés) para reducir las emisiones de carbono.

Air pollution challenges and solutions are primarily urban; that’s why, to achieve the ambition of the Paris Climate Agreement and SDG agenda, we better look at cities. Local and global urban pollutions are better addressed at the metropolitan level than at the municipal level.

Is it possible to achieve a no net loss, or even a net gain of biodiversity while maintaining economic growth? Biodiversity offsets can help achieve such a pressing goal. This emerging conservation strategy consists of actions that compensate for significant residual impacts arising from project development after prevention, minimization, and mitigation measures have been taken, following the mitigation hierarchy, in order to prevent a net loss of biodiversity.
