O Brasil é um dos países membros fundadores do BID. Como os demais acionistas, o Brasil designa um governador que representa o país na Assembleia de Governadores .
Para as operações diárias do Banco, o país está representado na Diretoria Executiva por uma cadeira que compartilha com o Suriname. O governador pelo Brasil escolhe junto ao governador por Suriname a um diretor executivo que trabalha na sede do BID, em Washington, D.C., durante um mandato de três anos.
