Juan Francisco Alemán is the Alternate Executive Director for Panama and Venezuela at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IDB Invest).
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Alemán was employed at Citibank for 24 years. From 2015 until 2024, Mr. Alemán was the Managing Director responsible for the oversight of the Compliance function in the Wealth Management and Private Banking business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, based in London. Earlier in his career at Citibank, Mr. Alemán led the Corporate Compliance function as a Managing Director for Asia-Pacific, based in Singapore, and served as Interim Head of Compliance for Citi Global Markets Japan, based in Tokyo. Before that, Mr. Alemán also served as a Managing Director in the Compliance Department for Latin America, based in Miami, and as a Corporate Finance officer based in Panama and in New York.
In the public sector, Mr. Alemán served as the Chief of Staff of Panama’s Ministry of Economics (MIPPE) earlier in his career, during the period in which Panama completed its debt restructuring under the Brady Plan, followed by its inaugural bond issuances in international markets.
He has a Juris Doctor degree from Duke University School of Law in Durham, North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Relations from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Mr. Alemán is a member of the Bar in the District of Columbia and in the State of California, having practiced law in San Francisco after completing his law studies.
