IDB announces new discount note program

The Inter-American Development Bank today announced that it is preparing to launch a new short-term borrowing instrument in the form of a Discount Note Program. The three dealers appointed to arrange the program are Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) , Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch GSI. The dealers will assist the Bank with developing the program for sales of short-term securities in the United States and international money markets. The Bank expects the program to be implemented within the next few weeks.

Peru and Ecuador to launch binational plan to promote peace process

Presidents Alberto Fujimori of Peru and Jamil Mahuad of Ecuador will present the Binational Developmental Plan for the Border Region at the headquarters of the Inter-American Development Bank on Feb. 4 in a ceremony that begins at 9 a.m. at 1300 New York Avenue N.W. IDB President Enrique V. Iglesias will deliver welcoming remarks prior to the presentations. The development plan is an integral part of a peace agreement that was signed on Oct. 26, 1998, putting an end to a long-standing border dispute in a sparsely populated frontier area.

IDB, Britain, sign 2 million agreement to assist 10 nations: Central American Isthmus, the Caribbean, and Mexico

LONDON -- Inter-American Development Bank President Enrique V. Iglesias and Clare Short, Britain's Secretary of State for International Development, today signed documents establishing a fund of 2 million pounds sterling to help institutions build executive and developmental capacity in 10 countries that include the Central American Isthmus, the Caribbean, and Mexico. The resources from the grant from the United Kingdom, to be administered by the IDB, will also be used to strengthen innovative and participatory partnerships to benefit the poorest sectors of the population.

IDB and U.N. agency sign agreement to cooperate in world efforts to resolve problems related to drugs

VIENNA, Austria - Inter-American Development Bank President Enrique V. Iglesias and Pino Arlacchi, executive director of the United Nations International Drug Control Programme, have signed an agreement to establish closer cooperation in taking steps to resolve drug-related problems. The IDB and the UNDCP agreed to undertake periodic consultations to promote cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean on reducing the illicit supply and demand for drugs on the basis of initiatives of individual countries. In addition, the IDB agreed to undertake the following measures:

IDB approves $637 million to Colombia to assist public sector reform and to strengthen agriculture

The Inter-American Development Bank today announced the approval of two loans totaling $637 million for Colombia to assist public sector reform and to enhance the competitiveness of the agricultural sector. PUBLIC SECTOR REFORMA $550 million loan, the largest ever by the IDB to Colombia, will support the government's effort to make public spending more efficient, improve tax collections, modernize the social security system, and advance efforts by subnational governments to balance their budgets.

Guatemala and IDB sign $40 million for emergency assistance

Guatemala Finance Minister Pedro Miguel Lamport and Inter-American Development Bank Executive Vice President K. Burke Dillon today signed documents for a $40 million loan to Guatemala for reconstruction and repair of public works and preventive measures against flooding. The program finances recovery efforts from destruction caused by flooding resulting from the El Niño phenomenon, as well as the devastation due to Hurricane Mitch.

IDB approves $25.8 million for relief and reconstruction in Honduras

The Inter-American Development Bank today announced the approval of $25.8 million in concessional financing to Honduras to help repair and rebuild infrastructure that was damaged by Hurricane Mitch. The resources bring the total IDB soft financing to Honduras since the hurricane to $184 million in the areas of infrastructure and social investments.

IDB approves $10 million to support vocational training for low-income youth in Brazil

The Inter-American Development Bank today announced the approval of $10 million in nonreimbursable financing to support the Capacitaçao Solidária program, which provides vocational as well as life skills training for marginalized urban youth in Brazil The resources will also strengthen private training organizations through orientation seminars and individual course monitoring. The operation will also document and systematize innovative training instruments and methodologies under the country´s Capacitação Solidária program in order to enhance program replicability.

IDB to boost lending for state reform in Latin America and Caribbean

The Inter-American Development Bank plans to boost its lending for state reform programs to around $6 billion over the next few years to support the modernization of the public sector in Latin America and the Caribbean, IDB President Enrique V. Iglesias said today. Speaking at a luncheon the IDB hosted for delegates to the International Conference on Reinventing Government, Iglesias noted that Western Hemisphere countries seem to have reached a consensus on the direct link between the quality of government and successful development.
