IDB study diagnoses investment promotion agencies in Latin America

IDB launches coalition to promote cross-cutting skills in the 21st century

Today, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), together with 22 partners from the public and private sector, announced the launch of a 21st century skills coalition that will support the implementation of a new generation of education and training policies in Latin America and the Caribbean. This coalition will provide more than US$34.7 million in funding to support projects that will promote these skills among children and youth in the region.

Reducing trade costs could boost exports to Korea

Exports from Latin America and the Caribbean to Korea could grow by about US$10 billion, or 43%, if a set of reforms to reduce trade costs are implemented and bilateral cooperation reach new levels, according to a study by the Inter-American Development Bank. The report, Stepping Up Cooperation, Policy Options for Latin America and Korea, was presented during the 5th Korea-LAC Business Summit, held in Seoul, Korea, on October 7th and 8th.

The value of exports from Latin American and the Caribbean fell by 1.6 percent in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the same period in 2018. The decrease was caused by lower export volumes and falling commodity prices.

IDB launches Superheroes of Development contest to recognize executing agencies

The Superheroes of Development Award will recognize executing agencies of IDB-financed projects that have successfully addressed challenges during its implementation. The contest will identify eight finalists from across Latin America and the Caribbean who will travel to IDB’s Headquarters in Washington, D.C. to present their solutions.

Latin American and Caribbean exports rise but at a slower rate

Exports from Latin America and the Caribbean hit their highest level in six years thanks to a 9.9 percent increase in 2018, albeit amid growing downside risks in the future, according to a new report by the Inter-American Development Bank. The region exported $1.08 trillion last year. While this is the highest level since record exports in 2012, the rise fell short of the 12.2 percent growth rate for 2017. The region’s performance also lagged a worldwide trade increase of 11.6 percent for the Jan-Sept period (compared to the same period the previous year).
