Washington, D.C. — The Inter-American Development Bank Group together with MIT Solve launch an Open Innovation Challenge that seeks to find the most innovative solutions that substantially reduce or eliminate single-use plastic and plastic waste in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Rethink Plastics Challenge offers the selected solutions prizes totaling 60,000 USD.

In its second edition, the call for proposals will be open from March 4th to May 17th, 2019. The Superheroes of Development Award will recognize executing agencies of IDB-financed projects that have successfully addressed challenges during its implementation. The contest will identify eight finalists from across Latin America and the Caribbean who will travel to IDB’s Headquarters in Washington, D.C. to present their solutions.

Paris — The Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Group) announced its support for the newly formed Caribbean Climate-Smart Coalition, a public-private initiative aimed at funding an $8 billion investment plan to transform the region into the world’s first “climate-smart” zone and benefit an estimated 3.2 million households in the region.

The Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC), the private sector arm of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group, signed a US$3 million loan to Arawak Port Development (APD Limited), a public-private partnership set up between the private sector and Government of the Bahamas. The project will finance the installation of a rooftop solar photovoltaic system on APD Limited's main building at the port, as well as financing the retrofit of the port’s terminal lights to LED, along with other energy efficiency activities at the port.

A $35 million loan will enhance the connectivity of four airports on the Family Islands The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a $35 million loan designed to improve infrastructure at four airports on the Family Islands, as The Bahamas' less developed outer islands are known. The loan will contribute to the archipelago's regional and international integration through upgrades at the airports of Exuma, North Eleuthera, Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay.
