The prize recognizes the institutions’ contributions to economic and social development in the region
COSTA DE SAUÍPE, Brazil – Three civil society organizations received the Inter-American Development Bank’s Juscelino Kubitschek Award in recognition of their contributions to economic, cultural, and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The prize’s third edition garnered over 500 nominations from 28 countries, with Associação de Ballet e Artes para Cegos, of Brazil, and Instituto Nicaragüense de Cultura Hispánica, of Nicaragua, winning in the “Social, Cultural, and Scientific” category. In the “Economics and Finance” category, the Caribbean Centre of Excellence for Youth Entrepreneurship of Barbados was the winner.
For each category, the winners share a prize of $100,000.
IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno presented the prizes during the awards ceremony at the annual meeting of the Bank’s Board of Governors, held this year in Costa de Sauípe, in the state of Bahia, Brazil.
Four honorable mentions were also presented: in the “Economics and Finance” category to Serviço Brasileiro de Apoio às Micro e Pequenas Empresas (Brazil) and Consorcio de Investigación Económica y Social (Peru). In the “Social, Cultural, and Scientific” category, Comitê paraDemocratização da Informática (Brazil) was recognized along with Cauce Ciudadano (Mexico).
The selection committee chaired by President Moreno selected the winners last November. The main selection criteria were based on projects promoting youth entrepreneurship and cultural and social strengthening and promotion activities.
The award, created in 2009 when the IDB was celebrating its fiftieth anniversary and given every two years, is the largest award granted by a multilateral institution in the region. The prize honors the memory of former Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitschek, who in his time envisioned initiatives for regional integration to enhance the quality of life in Latin America and the Caribbean, which subsequently led to the creation of the IDB.
With this award, the IDB reaffirms its commitment to recognizing the work of organizations that promote development and contribute to greater economic opportunities and social inclusion in the region.
