MICI Participation in the IAIA Annual Conference
MICI Director Victoria Marquez-Mees and Case Officer Eva Heiss participated in the annual conference of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) on May 11 - 14, 2016 in Nagoya, Japan. The annual conference attracts the participation of hundreds of government officials, technical experts, academics, and CSO leaders who work globally on social and environmental impact assessment issues.
MICI participated in a session jointly organized for the first time by six Independent Accountability Mechanisms (IAMs) of the following multilateral International Finance Institutions (IFIs): IDB (MICI), World Bank Group (IP and CAO), African Development Bank (IRM), European Investment Bank (EIB-CM), and Asian Development Bank (AM). The joint session “IFIs Accountability Mechanisms: Resilience and Sustainability”, included presentations by IAM representatives on their varied experiences and approaches related to the mediation and investigation work they carry out worldwide.
The focus of the discussion was how to use these comparative lessons to effectively respond to the harms experienced by citizens and communities as well as improve the quality and impact of projects financed by the IFIs. Victoria made a presentation entitled “How can Accountability Enhance Community Engagement” which highlighted the symbiotic relationship between accountability, sustainability, and community resilience, as well as presented a case study highlighting the challenges and opportunities related to dispute resolution processes.
