MICI participates in workshops in Brazil and Peru
As part of the efforts to disseminate the new Independent Consultation and Investigation Mechanism Policy, the MICI participated in workshops for professionals working in the area of sustainable financing and human rights. In the events that took place in Lima and São Paulo, Victoria Márquez-Mees, MICI Acting Director, made presentations on the scope of the new Policy approved on December 17th 2014 and invited the participants to support the MICI in achieving its objective of promoting greater access to the Mechanism to those populations impacted by IDB operations.
In Lima, Peru, the MICI was invited to participate in the “Training Workshop on the Internal Policies of multilateral, regional and National Banks and their accountability mechanisms” that took place at the Cultural Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, on May 19th and 20th, 2015. The event was organized by the INTE-PUCP (Institute of Natural Sciences, Land and Renewable Energy of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru), Group on Funding and Infrastructure (Grefi) and the Regional Coalition for Transparency and Participation. 24 civil society organizations and social movements of the Region that monitor how development banks implement of their social and environmental policies participated in the event, as well as academics and students.
In the same manner, on May 21st and 22nd, 2015 the MICI participated the “Seminar on Public Policy, human rights and sustainable funding” on held in São Paulo, Brazil. The event was organized by the São Paulo State Public Ombudsman Office, the School of the Public Ombudsman Office of the São Paulo State and the Federal Public Ministry. The audience, around 60 participants, was comprised justice promoters, lawyers, academicians, civil society organizations, social movement representatives, among others. The panel, focused on the scope of the new MICI policy and relevant case management data, also included the participation of Mr. Cosme Vitor, who shared his experience with the Mechanism as representative of two cases currently managed by the MICI.
Both audiences expressed special interest in learning about the Mechanism´s mandate and the requirements to file a request. These events are a unique opportunity for the MICI to be known by interested stakeholderss, as well as to disseminate that the Mechanism can assist communities that could potentially be affected by an IDB operation .
