Research Fellow Program

The Inter-American Development Bank is an international financial institution created in 1959 to help accelerate the economic and social development of its member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Bank, whose headquarters is in Washington, D.C., is today the principal source of external public financing for many countries of the Latin American region. The Bank is owned by its 48 member countries. This year, the IDB is committed to promoting diversity, striving to hire the best candidates from its member countries and foster an environment that best taps their ideas and efforts to enhance the mission of the institution in the region. The Research Fellowship Program is a tool to meet this commitment.

The purpose of the Research Fellowship Program (RFP) is threefold:

  • Provide the Bank with up-to-date knowledge and skills in a variety of areas pertinent to the Bank that have been or are being acquired through academic programs.
  • Provide research and related support to country offices so that more time can be focused on core developmental issues.
  • Provide students or recent university graduates with opportunities to receive, expand and apply their educational and practical experiences in areas relevant to their current academic/professional pursuits. The RFP is characterized as an opportunity for on-the-job-training, performing research or other activities in a managerial, administrative, or technical environments where job skills can be further developed and strengthened.

The Program provides participants with an opportunity to obtain experience in the Bank’s operations and studies, before they move on to continue with their education or professional career in the labor market.

  • In the case of an Institutional Agreement, the Bank signs an agreement with the selected candidate and the established entity (university, corporation, organization or other similar type structure) that will coordinate the program. The institution identifies qualified candidates and recommends them to the Bank for acceptance into the program. The institutional fellows are subject to the terms of the agreement between the Bank and the cooperating institution. In the case of an Individual Agreement, the Bank contracts directly with the individual participant. In each case, at least three candidates will be considered before the selection is made.
  • All contracts will conform to the laws of the country in which they are being executed.
  • Contract periods vary contingent upon the needs of the Bank. In the case of Individual Agreements, the Program is designed to offer employment contracts up to a year in duration with the possibility of renewal up to a total of two years.
  • Each position will have terms of reference (TOR) that describe the work to be performed by the Research Fellow.
  • The TOR will also provide a basis for the evaluation of the Research Fellow’s performance at the end of the contract.
  • The TORs are part of the Research Fellow’s contract. The TOR should contain clear and detailed descriptions of the work to be performed, the place where it will be carried out, the Research Fellow’s contribution and the expected results.

Remuneration will be determined based on the characteristics of the assignment to be performed. Compensation may be established on an hourly, daily or monthly basis.
