SECCI Conference on Energy Efficiency and Competitiveness,  September 15th and 16th in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The Inter-American Development Bank is committed to playing a leading role in assisting the region to deal with the urgent challenges associated with climate change. The surge in world energy prices and a growing international focus on climate change is sparking interest in energy economics and policies. Energy efficiency is increasingly regarded by countries and companies as a strategy to maintain and increase economic competitiveness. To successfully implement energy efficiency programs for economic growth and prosperity the adoption of innovative technologies and policies is key.

To address these issues, the IADB together with the Governments of Germany and Switzerland will hold a conference on Energy Efficiency and Competitiveness, on September 15th and 16th in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This conference aims to raise awareness, enrich knowledge, and foster concrete programs and projects in energy efficiency in Latin America. The conference will bring together the private- and public sector, regulators, policymakers and key stakeholders from Europe and Latin America in order to facilitate transfer of best practices and lessons learned, and stimulate investments in energy efficiency. This conference will focus on all Latin American countries because of the important role of energy efficiency in increasing economic competitiveness and contributing to climate change adaptation for the entire region.

SECCIClimate Change in Today’s Global Agenda - Annual Meeting of the Board Of Governors of the IDB And IIC

April 4-8, 2008
Miami, FL

Objective:

Climate change has become one of the issues with greatest salience in the global political agenda. A clear signal is the fact that the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded for raising climate change awareness.  The objective of this event is to continue to highlight this urgent issue and discuss possible solutions.

This inter-active session with stakeholders from throughout the world seeks to engage participants on identifying how the IADB and Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Initiative (SECCI) can provide support to the region in combating climate change. In this vein, it seeks to engage finance, energy, and environment public officials from the region, as well as business leaders in the sector, in identifying and exchanging views on actions needed to facilitate investment in sustainable energy, showcasing the role SECCI can play in such process.

Description

The dynamic of the event will simulate a “talk show.”  The format of the meeting is based on three essential components:

  1. The introductory video
  2. Two panels
  3. The audience participation

The video

The session will initiate with a video of the impacts of climate change in the region, opening the dialogue among the panelists and with the audience.  The video will include not only images of the effects of climate change in the region, but also interventions by the IADB regarding its actions to address the issue.

The Panels:

The panel will be moderated by Roberto Vellutini. The first panel will be an overview of the issue. Each speaker will be asked to address challenges in fighting climate change and possible opportunities in the region for meeting the challenges of climate change. It will be composed of climate change experts, activists, government, and business representatives. The second panel will be the IADB clients’ perspectives on addressing the challenges and opportunities of climate change.

The Audience:

The audience will be comprised of interested actors from a range of sectors including project developers, finance, NGOs, international organizations and government representatives.
