Gender Equality and Social Inclusion

Over the past four years the IDB has been addressing gender issues in conjunction with other social inclusion issues, particularly the rights of indigenous peoples and afro-descendent communities. Initiatives that address multiple dimensions of social inclusion help to improve targeting, develop more culturally and socially appropriate development interventions, and better meet the specific needs of women and men from populations groups that have been historically excluded.

The new Strategy for Indigenous Development and the Operational Policy on Indigenous Peoples integrate an explicit focus on gender equality and women's leadership.

The program on disability has also included a special focus on gender and disability; and actions under the Social Inclusion Trust Fund also give important priority to gender equality and women's empowerment issues.
