Our Purpose
The main objective of this website is to present updated information on definitions, concepts,
accounting procedures, and the empirical results of health accounts and national health
accounts studies. It provides links to PAHO's Regional
National Healthcare Expenditures (NHEx) Database, and to other
regional and global databases containing social expenditure and
development indicators.
The website also describes and provides
links to methodological guidelines on the development of
health accounts estimates and
economic and financial indicators for the health sector, to working
papers, and to country studies and reports. The latter include
studies of national health care expenditures and sources of
financing, as well as studies reporting standard economic indicators
for health accounts.
Our primary aim is to provide clear information to stakeholders
involved in making decisions in the health sector. In addition
we aim to keep all those working or studying in the field of health
accounts informed about the ongoing discussions about conceptual and
methodological issues related to the definition of boundaries of the
health sector, classification of national health care expenditures,
data sources, and international comparisons of national expenditures
and sources of financing. Finally, we hope that this website
will serve to increase the sharing and exchange of information and
knowledge on health accounts, and thus contribute to evidence-driven
decision-making in all countries.
Who We AreThis website was created by the
LAC Health Accounts working group of the
interagency initiative Shared Agenda for Health (SAH),
based in Washington, DC. SAH is a partnership formed by the
following international organizations, for collaboration in the area
of health:
Inter-American Development Bank
(IDB)
Pan-American Health Organization
(PAHO)
US Agency for International
Development (USAID)
World
Bank (WB)
Through the LAC Health Accounts Working Group,
IDB, PAHO, USAID and WB are working together to promote the
production and use of health accounts in the Latin America and
Caribbean region, as a public good and an essential element of the
countries' infrastructure. All four organizations are committed to providing
technical and financial support for sound policymaking based on solid
empirical evidence, and are collaborating to make their resources go
further.
Information about the LAC Health Accounts Working Group's objectives may be obtained
from its Coordinated
Action Plan 2002-2004. To learn more about the Shared Agenda for
Health in the Americas initiative, please visit the related PAHO
webpage.
