Updates From the LAC Health Accounts Steering
Committee
October 2002
Up until 1998, FUNSALUD –
a Mexican NGO - had been conducting health accounts estimates.
Subsequently, the National Health Program 2001-2006 proposed by the
Ministry of Health established as a priority the
institutionalization of national and state health accounts in order
to the strengthen its stewardship function of the health system. The
Ministry of Health has been working on this project for the past
year nationally and at the regional level with four states. Staff in
another five states have already been trained to carry out regional
health accounts.
Nationally, the health accounts information has been used mainly
by the strategic planning office. Regionally, the states have
produced budgets for the next year based on state health accounts
information. Mexico is very interested in sharing its experiences,
and believes that its experience represents an important
contribution to the debate about the uses of health accounts for
policy planning.
August 2002
A health accounts unit was created within the Ministry of Health to
ensure continuous production of health accounts estimates. As part
of reporting to the
OECD, Mexico will be producing revised and up-to-date
estimates using the OECD SHA guidelines. The National Statistical
Office (INEGI) expressed interest in developing Health Sector
Satellite Accounts, and ECLAC and PAHO will follow-up on this
initiative.Submit Your
