From the LAC Health Accounts Steering Committee
April 2004
Since 2000 the Canadian
Institute for Health Information (CIHI), a non-profit
organization established by health ministers in 1994, and Statistics
Canada, have been publishing annually a report entitled "Health
Care in Canada". Included in this report is information
on health expenditures. The Health Statistics Division of Statistics
Canada collects, compiles, analyzes, abstracts, and publishes
statistics related to the health status and expenditures of
Canadians.
Statistics Canada has been supplying data on health expenditures
to the OECD
database on continuous basis since 1960 (the database elements
can be found here,
p.8-10). In addition, CIHI maintains the National
Health Expenditures Database (NHEX) which provides an overview
of all health spending in Canada, by spending category and source of
funding, since 1975. The data are extracted from public documents,
including national and provincial/territorial public accounts and
other financial reports. Other sources include private
insurance companies, AC Nielsen Canada, and Statistics Canada.
Two other databases supply information about health spending in
Canada: the National
Physician Database and the Canadian
MIS Database formerly known as the Annual Hospital Survey.
