ECCD Materials from the IDB
Children born into poverty tend to remain poor for many reasons, but one is preeminent: they are much less likely to succeed in school. A critical cause of school failure among children in poverty is that they are not "ready to learn" when they enter school, and they seldom catch up. Early childhood intervention programs can help break this cycle of poverty; they can help level the playing field for disadvantaged children and help them reach their full potential.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty and sees early childhood care and development (ECCD) as a cost-effective approach that can enhance investments in other areas, such as education, health care, and violence prevention programs. In connection with its commitment to greater investment in ECCD, the Bank has produced several items that should be of interest to people concerned with economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Video shows importance of investing in children
Developed in relation to an IDB Seminar: Breaking the Poverty Cycle: Investing in Early Childhood, an IDB video of the same name portrays the conditions in which millions of disadvantaged children in Latin America and the Caribbean live, and illustrates the importance and benefits of early childhood intervention programs, including their ability to help break the poverty cycle and their cost-effectiveness.
Government, business, and professional leaders, as well as others concerned with economic and social issues in the region will want to see this informative and telling video.
How-to Guide Offers Practical Information for ECCD Programs
The computer-based ECCD Guide helps people working in this area to design, execute, and evaluate ECCD programs; the user-friendly format provides information and tips for different project stages. The Guide should be useful to anyone involved with ECCD operations, regardless of their connection to the IDB. The Guide comes as a diskette with an accompanying booklet. It is now also available on the website for the IDB's Social Development Division. ECCD Guide
Booklet Describes IDB's Work on ECCD
The booklet, Breaking the Poverty Cycle: Investing in Early Childhood, outlines the IDB's perspective on the problems of children in poverty, how ECCD can help, and the IDB's work in this area. It also seeks to stimulate new ideas and projects in this field.
