Oportunidades y desafíos de la biotecnología para la agricultura y agroindustria de América Latina y el Caribe

The introduction and consolidation of agricultural biotechnology in the region is a complex and costly process that requires a group of specific, targeted actions that remain coherent over time. This report is part of a set of studies commissioned by the Bank to serve as background research for the development of its strategy on the development of agricultural and forestry technology. The authors describe the development of agricultural biotechnology in the region, the existing capacity for scientific research, and the characteristics of companies working in the field. It also analyzes various strategies and institutional policies needed for the development of biotechnology.

Walter Jaffé is Vice President of the National Council on Scientific and Technological Investment in Caracas. Diógenes Infante is a research assistant at the Council.
