The more than 400 indigenous peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean are culturally linguistically heterogeneous and have very different economic systems, ways of interacting with their physical environment and patterns of integration into national society. Most sources agree that there are 40 to 50 million indigenous people in Latin America and the Caribbean (accounting for approximately 8 percent to 10 percent of the region's population) with higher than average rates of population growth. In countries such as Bolivia, Guatemala, and Peru, indigenous Peoples account for at least half of the total population.
