Over the last few years, the Inter-American Development Bank has increasingly promoted cooperation-based projects. These projects rest on the following simple framework: cooperation allows firms to obtain increased levels of innovation, competitiveness, and profits. For example, firms can increase productivity by lowering costs through joint-purchases of inputs and services; they can increase their value-added though upgrading their processes and products via joint-investments in new technology and public-private partnerships; they can boost their sales with the access to external markets that demand high volumes, and high levels of product quality and homogeneity, and compliance with health and environmental standards; and they can experience rises in employment as a consequence of new investments in new products and specialized services. This paper portrays the IDB´s experience in this field and extracts the lessons learned in the design and implementation of these projects.
