Cultural Land Use Analysis, CLAN

This paper describes the concept of cultural land use. This innovative concept is based on the fact that each human culture divides land into different categories, giving to each one of them special meanings related to access rights and use rules, both of them important components of customary law and built on traditional knowledge. Cultural land use analysis is an important tool for culturally based and participatory approaches in land management planning, cadaster and titling, impact assessment, stakeholder analysis, sustainability assessment and land change monitoring. This concept underlies the development of CLAN (Cultural Land Use Analysis) a Geographic Information System (GIS) based tool, developed between IADB and the Swiss Technological Federal Schools of Lausanne and Zurich. The CLAN software will be available for the public the second half of 2004. The English version of the publication will be available by the end of March 2004.
