This publication is addressed to banking superintendencies that want to develop a framework for the prudential regulation and supervision of microfinance. It is written in response to the growing demand for guidance on how to develop such a framework. An increased awareness of the potential of microfinance, together with the emergence of numerous successful and rapidly growing microfinance institutions, has placed this issue on the policy agenda of most countries in the region.
