Latin America and the Caribbean now face a critical challenge: how to achieve strong growth and investment that in the medium and long term is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. Since the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio in 1992, the region has gone through a period of economic and social reform, and established a more widespread capacity for environmental management, but there is still a long way to go before reaching that vision of sustainable development set forth 30 years ago in Our Common Future. The Inter-American Development Bank has played a critical role on the environmental front in the region during this period and is now shaping a new strategy to address more fully the environmental dimensions of poverty reduction and sustainable economic growth. The purpose of this report is to provide IDB Governors with a brief review of critical trends in the state of the environment and natural resources in the region; a summary of the Bank's environmental activities in the past few years; and a description of the central elements of a new environmental strategy the Bank is developing this year to support its members efforts to achieve genuine sustainable development in the future.
