Roundtable Rationale and Objectives

The Roundtable was a collaborative effort of the IDB Group units and departments, working with private and public sectors and institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean. The idea for the Roundtable originated from the growing interest in promoting the development of capital markets in the region and recognition of the need for a new strategy for reform.

We are witnessing an evolution in the development of international capital markets. This evolution is evidenced by the growing importance of international exchanges, driven by the interest in increasing liquidity and technological advance. Also there is increasing migration of the trading of companies based in emerging markets to more developed securities markets. Further, greater awareness is driven toward the interrelationship between the development of capital market and other segments of the financial sector. The Roundtable was designed to focus on the impact of these issues on the development of capital markets in the region and also to examine specific strategies countries could adopt to foster market development. Specifically, the Roundtable focused on second generation reform issues pertinent to the development of capital markets in Latin America and the Caribbean, including, the:

    • role of market institutions;
    • development of domestic bond markets;
    • role of institutional investor in developing capital markets; and
    • importance of regional market integration.

The Roundtable was targeted at senior officials of private and public sector institutions in the region, who are working in this arena. Speakers included experts and professionals from the US, Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean.
