This working document is a first attempt at addressing the fundamental of lack of access to conventional financial services indigenous people face. After defining the scope and characteristics of traditional indigenous economies and their articulation with the increasingly globalized market, the paper suggests a number of alternatives to conventional bank loans that could be further studied and supported on a pilot basis.
