This article, which has been published in the "Guías para pueblos indígenas sobre políticas, proyectos, asistencia financiera y técnica de agencias internacionales, gubernamentales y no gubernamentales en América Latina" (Comisión Nacional de Derechos Humanos, Mexico 1997, page 195) summarizes the process by which indigenous peoples issues became institutionalized in the Bank. It describes the strategic and normative framework, the areas of intervention, and the different types of projects the IDB is supporting. The article emphasizes how concerns about indigenous peoples´ demands and aspirations have evolved from a marginal concern to one of the mainstream issues for Bank action in the region.
