The IDB and Poverty Reduction
Recognizing that one of the greatest challenges faced by the countries in the region is the reduction of poverty and inequality, the IDB has adopted this objective as one of the main mandates of its Eighth Resource Replenishment and Institutional strategy.
The Bank pursues this objective through both its lending and non-lending activities. The main efforts of the Bank in this regard are summarized in the following documents:
-
The Inter-American Development Bank and Poverty Reduction: an Overview
- A Strategy for Poverty Reduction
Poverty Reduction and Promotions of Social Equity:
-
Technical Appendixes:
-
Summit of the Americas: Strategic Programs Agenda of the IDB
The Poverty and Inequality Unit undertakes a number of activities to promote policies for poverty reduction, both within the Bank and the region:
-
Knowledge building, through research projects and technical papers, and best practice and strategy papers.
-
Generation and improvement of data on poverty, inequality and other social indicators, through the MECOVI initiative, the household surveys data bank, and the estimation of social indicators.
-
Support to the IDB lending program and to countries of the region, through technical assistance in the preparation of projects; country papers; poverty reduction strategy papers; and the Social Equity Enhancing and Poverty Targeted Investment classification of projects.
-
Knowledge dissemination, through publications, and the Social Equity Forum, the Network of Policymakers on Poverty Reduction and Social Protection, and the Network on Inequality and Poverty.
The Poverty and Inequality Unit is also placing special emphasis on developing social protection schemes for poor people, improving the targeting on social programs and Bank projects in the region, and incorporating impact evaluation strategies in Bank lending operations.
