Building Inclusive Societies

Poverty is not just a problem of unsatisfied material needs. It is also the direct result of social exclusion. One way to promote the necessary normative changes and obtain political support in poverty reduction programs is by amplifying the voice of the poor, building their social capital and strengthening their organizational capacity. In addition, discriminatory practices must be eliminated and greater support given to projects that promote opportunities for the socially excluded groups. The Social Development Division in the Bank has undertaken special initiatives to promote social inclusion in the region.
