Child Labor & Child Protection: The Search for Solutions
In recent years, Child Labor and Child Right issues have come to the
forefront of the international agenda. The
international community has witnessed a series of landmark developments
in the continuing combat against child labor: the adoption of the UN Child
Rights Convention in 1989 by practically all of the countries and the 1999
passage of the new ILO convention against the worst forms of child
labor.
Despite such examples of progress, child labor persists and is on the
rise in many countries, including Latin America and the Caribbean. This
conference, organized by the World Bank and held on April 12, 2000 and April
13, 2000 in Washington, DC, provided an opportunity to share new research
and lessons learned from NGOs, civil society, international, and national
organizations, which can help effectively combat child labor. Topics
discussed included effective partnerships, the role of the private
sector, case studies, and emerging child protection issues.
Dr. Arianna Legovini's, an Economist on poverty for the Poverty and Inequality Advisory Unit, presentation focuses on expanding household choices to invest in the child?s education and providing insurance to households against income shocks.
