The Private Enterprise and Financial Markets Subdepartment addresses issues related to sustainable economic growth, private sector development and competitiveness. Its activities cover topics such as business climate, corporate social responsibility, infrastructure, financial reform and markets, micro, small and medium enterprises, and the environment.
The subdepartment supports Bank operations and it generates knowledge in areas of relevance to the region related to private sector development and social and environmental sustainability. The subdepartment meets this objective by providing four primary services: (i) technical support and review of all projects and programs that the operational and the private sector departments undertake; (ii) policy oriented research to stay abreast of innovation, technologies and best practices: (iii) publication and dissemination of research and information; and (iv) development of strategies and policies. The subdepartment is made up of three divisions.
- The Infrastructure and Financial Markets Division supports the Bank in developing consistent, high quality projects and programs in infrastructure. This includes projects in areas such as energy, transportation, water, financial markets, banking, capital markets, insurance and debt management, among other topics.
- The Environment Division seeks to enhance the Bank's effectiveness in contributing to sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean by managing corporate environmental and other related safeguard risks and providing analytical and technical support to improve the sustainability performance of Bank operations. The Division also works in areas such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change; water resources; biodiversity; and disaster risk management. It also supports the financing of environmental initiatives through its management of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and partnerships with donors.
- The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Division is responsible for promoting the creation of the necessary conditions for the development of the micro, small, and medium enterprise sector in the region. Major areas of work include microfinance, support to low-income groups, entrepreneurship, value chains, competitiveness and business climate. The division manages and carries out operations through the Social Entrepreneurship Program (SEP), designs operations financed by the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) and provides support to regional operations departments.
