Enterprise Development Strategy for micro, small and medium sized enterprises, by the American Development Bank, 1996
There is not much statistics on the number of small businesses. However, the majority of the firms in small business sector are at the small end of the scale in terms of employees and sales. The smallest have yet to achieve stability in either sales or longevity. The largest number is in the retail sector followed by the agricultural sector and services. Some produce stable income streams that have kept them in business for over ten years. Many provide an income that is higher than per capita GDP.
The Private Sector Commission of Guyana was incorporated in 1992. The PSC is a private organization composed of ten leading private sector organizations and seven corporate members. Much of the work of the commission is concerned with advocacy in favor of the private sector. The PSC seeks to improve the climate for private sector investment through making representations to government and the relevant institutions. The ultimate intention is to create a commission that will represent all sectors of the economy.
If advocacy is to be effective it should be backed by sound research, hence the formation of the Private Sector Center; the research arm of the Private Sector Commission. The Center was established in 1996, with technical assistance funded by the European Union. The Center provides information through its data Center and business library. These services are available to any private business or person paying a fee.
