ICT in Sustainable Economic Growth (E-Business)

Improving the competitiveness of Latin Americana and Caribbean countries is one of the major goals of the IDB. Within this framework it is crucial that businesses in the region, especially medium and small sized enterprises, leverage ICT applications and services that will enhance their effectiveness, market penetration and improve cooperation within value chains.

Recognizing the decisive role of ICT in the business arena, the Division has partnered with the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) to formulate a strategy and action plan aimed at facilitating ICT up-take by businesses in the region. As a result the Division has assisted or led the design and implementation of several projects that now form the "ICT Cluster" of the MIF.

Within the ICT Cluster, for which the SDS/ICT acted as a technical advisor, the MIF funds projects aimed at: a) building awareness and providing technical assistance to SMEs regarding the use of ICT to make their business more competitive; b) strengthening trust in on-line transactions through the participation of the private sector in the definition of the regulatory framework and the development of self-regulatory initiatives; and c) fostering the development of innovative ICT services and applications aimed at improving SME efficiency and value chain integration (ICT4BUS)
