About Us
Mission
The Information and Communication Technology for Development Division (ICT) facilitates matching the needs of countries in the area of information and communication technologies for development with the resources and capabilities of the Bank. As countries attempt to generate synergy to ensure that their diverse ICT related activities contribute to achieving development objectives, the Bank is involved in generating internal synergy in order to respond effectively and in a timely manner to a new set of integrated requirements from the LAC Region.
In order to accomplish this matching, the Division operates in through a matrix organization involving sectoral and intersectoral projects. Within the Bank, this approach enables the Division to integrate its involvement in sectoral projects where ICT is a component with the increasing requests from countries for intersectoral ICT for development projects. Forming strategic working alliances with other groups within the Bank is a key aspect of this approach since efforts are reinforced, not duplicated. From the country perspective, one contact point enhances their use of limited resources while facilitating access to Bank resources.
Among the Divisions specific responsibilities are:
- providing technical backstopping for project development and other activities supported by the Bank in the information and communication technology field;
- offering strategic and technical advice to governments on how to make better use of available information and communication technologies;
- developing cooperation agreements and co-financing arrangements to support research activities, studies, training, seminars, technical assistance and pilot projects;
- promoting linkages between public and private institutions within the Region and between the Region and institutions in non-borrowing countries, in order to strengthen the participation of local institutions in the identification and development of technical solutions to information and communication technology for development problems, and,
- preparing strategic analysis of needs, priorities and opportunities in borrowing member countries in support of planning and strategy development.
