Education, Science and Technology
The Education, Science and Technology Subdepartment was created in 2005 in recognition of the growing role played by knowledge-related investment by public and private institutions in fostering economic growth, competitiveness and social well-being. The subdepartment is made up of an Information and Communication Technology for Development Division and an Education Unit. Its main functions are to:
- Oversee and coordinate IDB technical support for operations that build capacity for science and technology, promote innovation, and foster ICT for development and education.
- Mainstream investment policies in the area of knowledge as a key component of national development agendas in borrowing member countries. Interface with the Bank's partners, clients and stakeholders to promote coherence and effectiveness in international assistance for scientific, technological and educational development.
- Become a leader in these areas in the region.
- Develop and maintain information databases to monitor science, technology, ICT and education policies and performance in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
