The following documents present good practices, lessons learned and experiences in sectors related to urban environmental management in different countries of Latin America. This ample of experiences will continue growing as the Bank contributes to move forward the environmental agenda in urban centers of the region. Also, these good practices and lessons learned are closely linked to the strategic guidelines presented in this site.
As part of the Technical Cooperation Environmental Governance: Basis for a Strategic Framework and Development of Instruments for Local Environmental Management carried out by the Bank, the following document presents the experience of Air Quality in Quito. The first document contains a synthesis of the experience and lessons learned during the process and after the study. The second document is a detailed compilation of the three main activities that constitute this experience including a strategic, programmatic and instrumental phases respectively: Air Quality Diagnosis, Analysis of the Air Quality Management Plan and Studies from the Use of Filters.
As part of the Technical Cooperation Environmental Governance: Basis for a Strategic Framework and Development of Instruments for Local Environmental Management carried out by the Bank, the following document presents the case of Solid Waste Management in Esmeraldas. The first document is a synthesis of the lessons learned during the development of the study and afterward. The second document is a detailed compilation of the three main activities that constitute this experience respectively: 1) Diagnosis and current environment baseline, 2) Strategic framework for environmental management and 3) Integrated plan for solid waste management. Additionally, the latter document contains a summary of the entire experience.
- Local Environmental Management in Juiz de Fora Minas Gerais, Brasil: an urban park case (2006)
The first document presents the lessons learned from the Urban Environment Action Plan in Juiz de For a Mina Gerais. The second document contains the totality of the experience. This study is part of the Technical Cooperation Environmental Governance: Basis for a Strategic Framework and Development of Instruments for Local Environmental Management carried out by the Bank. The document is organized in three sections that correspond to three phases that established the conceptual framework for the study: Strategic, Programmatic and Instrumental. Sections in the document contain the following information respectively: a) Diagnosis of an environmental management system and guidelines for environmental management for the municipality of Juiz de Fora; b) Analysis of the management plan for the Lajinha Park of the municipality. This analysis includes a review of the institutional programs and projects (e.g. programs for communication strategies, quality control and rehabilitation of ecosystems). It also includes those infrastructure projects (e.g. urbanization, landscaping and urban systems) and their finances; c) Analysis of the development of the environmental management systems for the Lajinha Park, including institutional, administrative and financing mechanisms.
This document summarizes good practices and lessons learned in the area of Urban Environmental Management in San Pedro Sula. This experience is part of the Technical Cooperation Environmental Governance: Basis for a Strategic Framework and Development of Instruments for Local Environmental Management carried out by the Bank. This technical cooperation includes the analysis of local environmental management experiences and the implementation of innovative management instruments. The document has electronic links to tools that are related to the themes that were used to analyze the experience namely Decentralization, Institutional Strengthening, Public Participation.
