IDB Policy

The IDB approved its Disaster Risk Management Policy in February 28, 2007. The purpose of this policy is to improve the Bank's ability to assist the borrowing member countries in the attainment of their development goals in sustainable economic growth, poverty reduction and promotion of social equity, by supporting their efforts to proactively manage disaster risk.

The policy document replaces the previous Natural and Unexpected Disasters Policy (OP-704), of 1999.

The new policy is a product of both electronic and in situ consultations from December 2005 to May 2006. Specific requests for comments were sent through the UN/ISDR network (5000 people globally) and through the IDB own list of Disaster Risk Management (DRM) contacts (600 people, mostly regionally). The new Disaster Risk Management Policy was elaborated based on the comments received and subsequent discussion in the Bank.
