Seminar Description

 

About 10-15% of the population in Latin America and the Caribbean lives with a disability. Until now persons with disability (PWD) have remained invisible in the statistics, and have not been targeted in development planning. This is changing with the development of new data. The primary objectives at the Bank is working for the full inclusion of PWD in the social and economic development in the region by: (i) creating greater awareness among Latin American and the Caribbean leaders and decision makers shaping the agenda for PWD, (ii) learning from best practices and develop new initiatives to promote the inclusion of PWD in areas such as education, labor, urban design and transport, (iii) expanding the role of the Bank in increasing opportunities for PWD.

 

The objective of this meeting is to improve IDB assistance on disability by exploring mechanisms and initiatives, which can help strengthen the disability agenda at the IDB. The emphasis of the meeting is operational and the issues addressed are:

 

 

After an introduction on IDB work in disability, new data on disability will be presented as part of the IDB Initiative on Disability Statistics (session 1). The data is highly relevant for operational staff, providing them with arguments for why and how to include PWD and the data to back it up. In session 2,  three staff members from the operations department will share their experience of technical assistance on disability to the region in presenting information on programs under implementation. Session 3 is a discussion on operational opportunities and implications with basis in the data available.
