The
Third Regional Public Sector-Private Sector Conference, “Banking
Sector Development and Regulation: Practical Matters”, was organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the
Association of Supervisors of Banks of the Americas (ASBA) and the
Federation of Latin-American Banks (FELABAN).
The meeting took place within
the framework of the Bank’s seminars on financial sector and
development and regulation. It brought together banking
supervisors, and representatives of central and private banks as
well as multilateral organizations. The purpose of the event was to
consolidate the institutional dialogue between the public and
private sectors and to discuss issues of credit shortage, costs and
volatility and its impact on industry financing in Latin America and
the Caribbean.
Discussions were centered on four main
topics:
- the development and implementation
of an adequate regulatory and supervisory framework in the
region;
- the development of implementation
and coordination strategies with the banking sector;
- the challenges facing the sector
in the region, and
- financing for small and medium
