Technical Assistance to Bank Projects
The IDB's Operating Policy on Women in Development and the Action Plan give a high priority to ensuring that women and men participate actively - both as contributors and beneficiaries - in IDB projects. In order to achieve this, the Gender Equality in Development Unit, SDS/GED, provides technical assistance to project teams designed to ensure that women's contributions are fully supported by Bank projects, and works with member countries and other areas of the Bank to develop special projects that address women's particular concerns. In that latter category, the GED Unit prepares studies and strategies with an operational focus in order to expand the frontiers of Bank investment.
This area of GED activities is largely demand-driven, responding to requests from project teams for technical assistance on GED issues in the designing and preparation of projects, and is a key component of the mainstreaming of GED activities in the Bank. Assistance is give to projects in priority areas such as health, education, agriculture, and the delivery of social services to the poor. In addition, the GED Unit will focus its efforts on several flagship themes over the next few years: Domestic Violence, Reproductive Health, Poverty, Women's Leadership and Representation, and Governance and Legal Reform.
