The region is plagued by persistent poverty. Does early childbearing perpetuate it? More specifically, what are the social and economic impacts of adolescent childbearing on mothers and children? To explore these questions, this paper reviews the results of four studies carried out in the region in the early nineties that included a comparison group of later childbearers, obtained retrospective life history information for the mothers, and included indicators of child well-being.
