The mission of the Gender Equality in Development Unit (GED), previously known as Women in Development Program Unit (WID), of the Inter-American Development Bank is to enhance the contribution of women to development and ensure their equitable participation in Bank-funded programs as well as in the benefits of development. The Unit has been instrumental in sensitizing Bank staff (both at Headquarters and in the field) and the staff of borrowing country agencies, to the importance and benefits of including women in project development and implementation. GED is active on issues such as enhancing the participation of women in public and civic life by strengthening their ability to become effective leaders, programs that benefit and bolster families and children, and programs that address issues of poverty and social equity (including health and education). In addition, GED has spearheaded efforts to address nontraditional areas such as domestic violence.
Since the approval of the IDB's Women in Development Policy in 1987, the Bank has made significant advances incorporating a gender perspective into the design of its operations and including women as participants and beneficiaries in the programs and projects it supports.
