Events
The Social Development Division (SDS/SOC), in its capacity as technical administrator of the Fund, has supported different initiatives with the aim of bringing issues such as inequality, poverty and social inclusion to the forefront of dialogues with policymakers and civil society organizations in the region.
The following is a list of some of these activities with a brief description of each one:
2006
Inclusive Labor Markets and Persons with Disability - May 3
In discussing the workability of persons with disability the audience gained knowledge of the process and scope of FUNLAR's activities. The meeting also covered general data on labor market participation of persons with disability in Brazil.
Advancing the Disability Agenda at the IDB - April 20
The Social Development Division, through the Disability Group, with the support of the Social Inclusion Trust Fund, organized a dissemination event on disability to address the following issues: (i) what is the IDB doing in disability Cork; (ii) results from the IDB Initiative on Disability Statistics; (iii) lessons from technical assistance on disability; and (iv) future opportunities for project design and implementation.
Leadership and Equality: Changing the Face of Latin American Politics - March 20
The event provided an opportunity to stimulate new dialogue and raise awareness of the success and challenges in leadership development across gender, ethnic and racial lines as women of African descent assume new roles in Latin American decision-making.
Advancing Equity: Lessons in Supplier Diversity - March 17
The seminar brought together leaders from the private sector to discuss how supplier diversity could be used as a means for advancing economic equity and economic empowerment for Afro-descendant communities in Latin America, by exploring lessons learned from experiences in United States and Brazil. The event will also present first person stories of HOW THEY DID IT from successful minority vendors.
What's in a Name? Lessons in Civil Registration and Identity from Five Latin American and Caribbean Cases - March 13
The Fund organized a consultant study reviewing lessons from the implementation of civil registration within key social and political programs: Mexico (Oportunidades), Colombia (Familias en Acción) , Peru (Land Titling Program), Bolivia (Civil Registration and Civil Society Strengthening), Haiti (Voter Registration).
Health Reform and Rights: Lessons from the Pioneer Experience of Chile - February 3
This seminar presented for discussion with Bank staff a comprehensive study examining "Chilean Health Reform from a Human Rights Perspective" with its author, Marcelo Drago. The seminar examined the Chilean universal access to health with explicit guarantees plan, drawing lessons from both the public and private sectors from its design and implementation. The study, contracted and led by ECLAC's Human Rights Division, is part of a larger IDB initiative on rights and development with financial support from DFID and participation from ECLAC and the World Bank.
Economists Forum - February 3
The Fund organized a small, closed forum of key economists and social specialists from the IDB, World Bank, and the LAC region, to discuss the little debated topic of the incorporation of rights (principally social, economic, and cultural rights) in the economic development of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Rights from the Start: Identity, Registration and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean - February 2
The seminar identified and explored in depth a little acknowledged social issue - the large numbers of Latin Americans and Caribbeans without basic birth and identity documents and its implications for social program eligibility, targeting and exercise of the rights of citizenship (e.g. voting, eligibility for public benefits and programs).
2005
Social Development Week - October 24-27
Bank-wide conference on social development. Fund supported the conference throughout and provided information for the public about social inclusion and the impact of exclusion on people of African descent in Latin America.
Promoting Racial-Ethnic Diversity in Education - October 3
Roundtable discussion with participants (both internal and external to the Bank) and the Coordinator of Diversity and Educational Inclusion in the Brazilian Ministry of Education. The program focused on the unique opportunities and challenges of implementing a comprehensive educational inclusion policy in Brazil.
Special Presentation - The Role of National and Regional Instruments and Mechanisms for the Promotion of Social Inclusion - October 1
Dialogue with Brazilian Vice-Minister of Racial Equality and Organization of American States Chairperson for the Working Group to elaborate the Inter-American Convention on Racial Discrimination and other forms of Intolerance. Included updates on Santiago +5 and the new Special Rapporteur on People of African Descent in the Americas for the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights.
Social Sectors: Health, Education and New Initiatives - July 14
Fund presentation on the Social Inclusion Trust Fund for Consulting Firms primarily from the United States and Europe.
Social Inclusion Learning Event SDS/SOC - July 6
SDS/SOC organized a meeting with Operations Specialists from the IDB regional departments to share lessons learned on making social inclusion an operational concept, including discussions on a broader concept of Social Inclusion.
Race and Ethnic Inequalities in Health & Health Care in LAC - April 15
IDB seminar financed by the Fund on heath and inequality related to race and ethnicity organized in Washington, D.C. to discuss the findings of the research papers with Bank.
Public Policy Dialogues on Exclusion based on Race or Ethnicity - April 14-16
The Fund supported the International Seminar on Advancing Equity and Racial Equality in Brasilia, which was co-sponsored by the Brazilian Secretariat for the Promotion of Policies on Racial Equality (SEPPIR), and the ILO. At this dialogue, participants from around the world exchanged ideas on the policy and practice of Affirmative Action.
2004
NGO Innovation Award 2004
In July 2004, the Fund launched a Call for Nominations for the 2004 NGO Innovation Award, which paid tribute to NGOs that have undertaken in the past, and continue to promote noteworthy initiatives in favor of the excluded groups targeted by the Fund. The Award provided "seed money" to allow NGOs to expand their efforts at promoting social inclusion and strengthen their organizational capacity. Results.
