Housing
Millions of Latin American and Caribbean households face a continually growing housing problem, as the formal economy has failed to produce enough homes to meet the needs of the growing population and has done little to improve the quality of the existing housing stock.
Policies and programs sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank mobilize private and public resources to expand the production and financing of new, low-cost housing and improve existing low-income neighborhoods and homes, creating better living conditions for the impoverished population of the region. Through such policies and programs, the Bank aims to:
- Increase the effectiveness of the public sector, as the facilitator of private sector initiatives and administrator of the public resources in support of low-income households;
- Cooperate in the technical design and implementation of sector-wide reforms that promote effective allocation of resources in the housing and related markets:
- Establish sustainable up-front and transparent subsidy schemes;
- Promote more efficient urban land markets;
- Develop sustainable financing mechanisms for housing
- Expand and increase the effectiveness of the construction industry; and
- Stimulate interest of private investors in the rental market.
