SDS/SOC aims to give technical support to the borrowing countries in their attempts to expand access to socially excluded groups to the services, physical conditions and legal rights necessary to live a decent life. The following are the three main areas in which the Division focuses its attention:

Production of inputs for decision-makers through: (i) data collection on socially- excluded groups; and (ii) research and diagnostic studies about the causes and consequences of social exclusion in the Region;

Capacity building in two levels: (i) internally, through awareness raising and training of Bank staff in the issue of social exclusion; and (ii) externally, through training of excluded communities on leadership and project development of projects and through coordination with other multilateral institutions; and

Best Practices identification and project development through: researching and seeking best practices on design, implementation and supervision of projects that promote social inclusion, including consultation with socially excluded communities.

In the implementation of the social inclusion agenda, SDS/SOC draws onhas the strategic, technical and operational support of the Technical Interdepartmental Working Group on Social Inclusion (TWG) of the IDB.
