Globalization, Transmissible Diseases and Inequity

This paper provides some discussions about the global dimension of transmissible diseases, especially AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis. The paper presents some data about the evolution of these diseases, worldwide and in Latin America and also discusses some results of cost-effective interventions to reduce their incidence. The paper evaluates the international funds available to finance the fight against these diseases according the current needs to accomplish the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) looking for reduce them on two thirds until 2015.
This working paper is being published with the sole objective of contributing to the debate on a topic of importance to the region, and to elicit comments and suggestions from interested parties. This paper has not gone through the Department's peer review process or undergone consideration by the SDS Management Team. As such, it does not reflect the official position of the Inter-American Development Bank.
