Inequality, Exclusion and Poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean: Implications for Development
On 5 June 2003, Chris Patten, Commissioner for External Relations and Enrique Iglesias, President of the Inter-American Development Bank will open a high level seminar on how to tackle social inequity, poverty and exclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean. Their objective is to raise general awareness on the urgent need to combat these social ills in both regions. They aim at uniting all actors of development on this issue : governments, international financial institutions, donors. This political initiative is rooted in a simple fact : 15 years of economic growth haven?t led to a better life for the vast majority of the Latin American and Caribbean people. To give impetus to the initiative, the European Commission and the IDB are promoting initiatives enabling exchanges of experiences and good practices between the two regions in the social field.
